Wastewater Facility Maintenance Supervisor

The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan and supervise the daily work of a section of the Wastewater Maintenance Department. The work is performed under general direction of the Wastewater Facility Maintenance Manager, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of Wastewater Maintenance Crew Chief by requiring supervisory duties including the performance of additional planning and reviews functions. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other City employees and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor work environment with potential personal hazards. Performs directly related work as required.

Acceptable Experience and Training:
Graduation from high school; and
Five years of progressively responsible experience in the operation or maintenance of municipal sewer collection or treatment systems; or
Eight years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance of industrial equipment; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Experience supervising or leading employees is preferred.

Required Special Qualifications:
Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen;
Must attain Iowa grade II wastewater license within 24 months of appointment, and
Possession of a valid State of Iowa Motor Vehicle Operators License.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only):
Oversees, plans, directs and organizes a section of the Wastewater Maintenance Department, including preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, facilities maintenance or a related area;
Plans, prioritizes, and identifies resources and skills required, materials needed and work steps necessary to complete the job;
Trains employees on equipment, task procedures, work standards and proper safety procedures;
Provides input on personnel/disciplinary issues within the division;
Researches wastewater projects in any given area to stay abreast of the history of repair, maintenance and construction within that area;
Reviews daily progress reports from designated lead workers to ensure work is being completed timely and investigates any delays;
Establishes job priorities and time frames for assigned personnel;
Monitors completion of job assignments to ensure compliance with standards and instructions and revises instructions and time frames as necessary;
Maintains detailed records of work to be performed and performed and of time, material, and spare parts required and used;
Completes thorough and accurate reports on daily work activities, including tasks completed;
Reviews and analyzes methods, policies, procedures and performance to implement or recommend implementation of objective improvement systems;
Determines when additional staff and resources are necessary to complete duties in timely manner and coordinates needs with other Wastewater Maintenance Staff;
Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
Evaluates completed work orders to determine appropriate time allowances and materials used and modifies work plans as needed;
Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
Evaluates completed work orders to determine appropriate time allowances and materials used and modifies work plans as needed;
Operates personal computer based maintenance management programs, maintains input and output of maintenance information for the scheduling of maintenance;
Assists in the development of safety policies and procedures and shall play a key role in ensuring employee use of safe work practices;
Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
